Background

Based upon the requests of native speakers of Yoruba who want to learn the language, and upon our experience teaching students who have requested we teach groups they form, we have developed a fool-proof mechanism for learning the Yoruba language.  We are certain without a doubt that anyone who takes our courses can become fluent by completing the full curriculum. From beginning stages, our students are more comfortable speaking Yoruba with others and therefore advance to fluency much more quickly than would be the case with a traditional language curriculum.  Fluency is our goal for everyone; however as with any language, this is a result of study and practice in the country of origin. This goal cannot be achieved in the classroom alone.  Our curriculum and programs equip students with the skills to consistently participate in conversation in social settings–and in Nigeria—while cementing literacy and pronunciation skills in the classroom and in one-on-one tutorial.

More importantly, our program focuses primarily on realistic dialogue for students of all levels.  The majority of class work focuses on the learning of new phrases for everyday conversation as well as for special occasions.  With teaching focused on preparing students to communicate with fluent Yoruba speakers today as opposed to at some point down the line, insisting on the use of the language for each and every student during all classes, we guarantee that most students will cement Yoruba verbal and comprehension skills rapidly.  Listening comprehension is also greatly improved by exposure to real use of the language.

Extra-Curricular

In addition to classroom instruction, our program supports language learning through outside cultural activities that emphasize language use.  Students are encouraged to participate on one level or another in our Drama Ensemble.  The Drama Ensemble sponsors programs in which learning students work with fluent speakers in presenting dramas, sketches, plays, monologues and poetry.  We aim to perfect each students speaking ability as well as his/her reading and writing abilities.  The Institute also hosts gatherings and film viewings that immerse the student in the fullness of traditional Yoruba culture.  Students of the Institute gain access to cultural tools that may have otherwise been impossible to locate and are supported in travel to Nigeria and other Yoruba-speaking regions.
